Work to build the first phase of the Northern Beltline is underway.

The Alabama Department of Transportation reports the contractor's crews are working to complete the first section of the four-lane highway between Highway 79 and Highway 75 in Jefferson County.

ALDOT says this initial project spans nearly two miles with bridges and is expected to be completed in late 2026.

The completed Northern Beltline will be a 52-mile interstate connecting Interstate 59 in northeast Jefferson County to the I-459 interchange near Bessemer.
