Officials say two-mile segment between Hwy. 75 and Hwy. 79 could open in late 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced Friday a contractor has been selected and work has begun to complete the first section of the Birmingham Northern Beltline.

The first phase will be a nearly two-mile stretch between Alabama Highway 75 and Alabama Highway 79 in northeast Jefferson County.

In May, the bid to construct this portion of the beltline was awarded to the lowest bidder for $64.7 million.

When the entire beltline is completed, the Northern Beltline will be a 52-mile interstate stretching from Interstate 59 in NE Jefferson County to the Interstate 459 interchange near Bessemer.
